Maths and Art

"The maths and mathematical language involved was great! It was also an activity that allowed for lots of differentiation as some children were simply challenged by measuring accurately, while others worked with fractions and others in percentages."

Wendy Evans,

maths subject leader, Chittlehampton Primary School, on using straws and nodes in her mixed age class.

February Facts

"From Counting to Calculating"

A new maths intervention programme for Y2-4 developed in Devon
From counting to calculating is a new intervention programme for maths that is intended for children who lie just above the bottom 5% in Y2 and for children in Y3 and Y4 who are working significantly behind age related expectations. The programme has been developed over a period of 18 months and is based on in-school action research on key understandings in mathematics and how to address misconceptions and gaps in understanding. The training and materials have been piloted by over 60 teaching assistants in Devon, working with children from Y1 to Y6, and the programme is aligned with the principles underpinning Numbers Count.

From counting to calculating is a ten week programme based on maths objectives taken from the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 curriculum that focus on key aspects of mathematical understanding related to additive reasoning. The programme can be run by a teaching assistant or a teacher and is intended for use with threes, pairs or one to one. Running the programme requires training; three and a half days in the first term and a half day in the second term with an opportunity to join a network for further support.

Participants need to be timetabled to run the programme, during the training term, with at least one group of children for three sessions a week. As the programme involves tailoring the sessions to meet the specific needs of the children, time for planning and preparation are crucial and we recommend that three hours a week are allocated for running the programme for each group.

Training in this new programme is available during the summer term as follows:

Bluecoats Children’s Centre, Torrington –  Starting April 20th
(Full dates April 20th, May 1st, May 23rd, July 9th (half day), October (half day))

Great Moor House, Exeter – Starting April 20th
(Full dates April 20th, May 2nd, May 24th, July 11th (half day), October (half day))

Cost: £375 for the first TA and £275 for a second TA
Additional TAs will be charged in the same way (a third would cost £375 with a fourth being £275)  Please book through CPD online

Each teaching assistant attending the training will receive a copy of the intervention materials.

If you are interested in purchasing the training for your school or cluster of schools, please contact Ruth Trundley, Primary Maths Adviser, for further information: ruth.trundley@devon.gov.uk

Engaging with the wider maths education community through National Conferences

National conferences provide opportunities for teachers and maths educators to come together, share ideas and consider new perspectives.

The Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM) have their annual conference in Swansea from April 2nd to 5th; further information can be found by clicking here.

The 4th National Dyscalculia and Maths Learning Difficulties conference is being held on June 28th in London; further information can be found by clicking here.

Both conferences are a mix of key note speakers and workshops and will provide rich CPD experiences.

Changes to National Curriculum Review Timetable
Michael Gove has announced that he has decided to change the planned timetable for the introduction of the new National Curriculum to allow for more radical reform of both curriculum and qualifications. "The recommendations of the Expert Panel are far-reaching and complex, and the Secretary of State has decided that additional time should be built in to the review timetable so that these recommendations, and the implications of the international evidence for individual subjects, can be fully debated and considered before final decisions are taken.

Instead of new curricula for English, mathematics, science and PE being introduced from 2013 - and any other subjects in 2014 - the new curriculum for all subjects will now be introduced in 2014."

The National Curriculum Review page can be found here.

Michael Gove's statement on the update is here.

You can read the final report from the Expert Panel here.
