Education Other than at School

This can best be described as education otherwise than at school for children of compulsory school age

  • who are temporarily unable to attend school because of illness or pregnancy;
  • who have been permanently excluded from school and are awaiting placement at another school or college;
  • who have the protection of a statement of special educational need, or have moved into Devon from special school provision, and are awaiting placement at a new school;
  • who are a child in care temporarily without a school place and awaiting placement at a new school;
  • whose parents choose to educate them at home: (known as elective home education).

Attendance - Regular and punctual attendance of pupils at school is both a legal requirement, and essential in order for students to maximise the opportunities available to them.

Home-based Education - The education of a child at home is a great responsibility for a family.  It demands a serious commitment of time, money, patience and energy.  If you are considering educating your child at home as opposed to in a school, it must be borne in mind that it is the decision of parents as to what and how the child learns and that it is your responsibility to provide your child with a broad and balanced curriculum.

If you would like to make a general enquiry about home education, please e-mail or telephone 01392 383916.

Hospital Education - The Hospital Education Centre, formerly the Exeter Hospital Teaching Service, was established in 1990 to provide education for children in the Exeter Hospitals. It is maintained by Devon Local Education Authority. In April 1998 with Local Government Reorganisation, the children's ward - Caroline Thorpe, joined the Centre's provision for young people at North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple.

Teaching takes place at:-

  • Bramble Ward, R D & E Hospital (Wonford)
  • Caroline Thorpe Ward, North Devon District Hospital, Barnstaple
