Ethnic Minority Achievement (formerly English as an Additional Language)
Our work includes working with underachieving black and minority ethnic pupils as well as pupils learning English as an additional language (including newly arrived pupils with limited English language skills and advanced bilingual learners). Members of the team work with staff in early years settings, schools and colleagues and with parents and carers to identify and respond to pupil needs and ensure that pupils reach their full potential …. many bilingual pupils are gifted and talented. A key aspect of our work is supporting schools thereby enabling them to enhance their capacity to meet the needs of these pupils through training. The team contributes to strategic planning within both schools and the Local Authority drawing on research based practise to inform policy and practise development. We also work closely with schools on specific projects such as, Youth Cultural Champions, Young Interpreters, Skin Deep and The Polish Community to promote race equality and community cohesion. 01803 869113 Leave the A38 (Exeter to Plymouth road) and follow A385 to Totnes (Paignton). Stay on the A385 through Dartington (left turn at Shinners Bridge mini roundabout). Approaching Totnes drive under the red footbridge (Welcome to Totnes) which joins the school sites. Turn almost immediately right into the Police Station car park. Drive through the car park to the prefabricated building – this is Redworth House. Parking is available directly outside the building. From the station turn right onto the main road and walk along Station Road/Ashburton Road to the Police Station (3 minutes).

The
team is part of the Learning and Development Partnership (LDP)
and works closely with others to bring about whole school change
in narrowing achievement gaps which in turn ensures equality of
outcomes, this is achieved through advice, specialist support for
first language and direct support for English language development
as appropriate.
